Hey guys, I'm back. I've been holed up for a good week and a half now, mostly because there's a flu epidemic raging around town and I caught a bit of it, or maybe it's because I recently bought Left 4 Dead 2 on a Steam sale. Take your pick.
While you're thinking about whether I'm a poor thing or a lazy good-for-nothing, take a look at the trailer above for Disney's newest crack at the video game industry, Disney Infinity. They're taking a major hint from Skylanders: Giants and are including 30+ figurines that you can plug in the USB-connected Portal of Power, allowing you to instantly play as that character. So far we've seen characters from The Incredibles, Pirates of the Caribbean, Cars, Toy Story, The Nightmare Before Christmas, Wreck-it Ralph, and even the TV show Phineas and Ferb. The game will also feature a "Toy Box" mode, where you can unlock all the areas and toys from the game and use your imagination to your heart's (or brain's) content.
There are a couple ways the toy figures in Disney Infinity are different from Skylanders. As described by IGN: "Items collected and experience gained are saved back to the toys without the need for button presses or menus. Stat upgrades and special attacks are handled differently - instead of permanently progressing characters like Skylanders, Disney Infinity uses a quick-swap mechanic accessed by physical circular tokens. Place the circular discs under the toy figure on the Infinity Base and they are granted a new power related to the Disney character featured on the disc. For example, a Finn McMissile disc would provide the ability to fire homing missiles. Up to two discs can be stacked for multiple power-ups."
I'm interested to see what other characters are included, but it seems they've reached their max number of figurines from The Incredibles universe, meaning there will probably be no Frozone aka Samuel L. Jackson figurine.
