Don't turn around
There are a few things you should know about Slender.
1. Slender is absolutly free to download on your PC.
2. Slender takes less than fifteen minutes to play.
3. In the time you could save 15% or more on your car insurance, this game will take the bravest and most gloriously mustached of men, and turn all of them into quivering piles of flesh.
Normally, I would tell you details about gameplay, but I feel a written walktrough of the game is a bit more appropriate. (not to mention fun)
As the game comes on, you hear footsteps. The crunching of leaves echoes along with the sounds of chirping crickets and the player's breathing. A flashlight comes on. Tall, dark, trees reach into a eerie night sky as far as you can see.

This prompt appears before the player, and then they're left to there own devices. You start walking in a random direction having no idea where you're going. There are no visible landmarks anywhere and the feeling of isolation begins to set in. Suddenly, up ahead, you see something.
A large tree stands in a clearing. Having nothing else to do and feeling as if the tree is somehow important, you make your way toward the bark covered tower. You slowly trek your way around the tree when you spot something attached to the trunk.
It's a page.
You stand before the piece of paper you have sought after, staring at the crude sketch. Two figures, one behind the other, both standing in what is obviously a forest. A single word has been scratched onto the surface of the page.
You pick the page up with a click, and a new propt proudly declares that you have found the first of eight. Well done, this shouldn't be too ba-
You turn looking for the source of the sound.
Your flashlight pierces through the darkness, looking for what could possibly be causing such a disturbence.
THUMP. THUMP. THUMP.
You still see nothing as the icy fingers of fear begin to slip towards you. You begin walking again.
The thumping persists, but you can still see nothing. You are now lost in the woods, the large tree long gone from your sight. The thumping is becoming louder. Stronger.
Something is following you.
You turn, shining your light through the foliage, desperate to know what stalks you so mercilessly. As your light races past the trees you see something.
A tall, dark, figure quietly staring at you.
All around things begin to turn to static as a single thought pierces your every being.
You turn and sprint as fast you can away from the figure, diving into the woods, not caring where you go.
He's following you.
He's chasing you.
HE'S BEHIND YOU
You turn around.
He's gone...for now.
One of the eight pages to find before the Slenderman finds you.
Perhaps I should fill you in on who and what the Slenderman is. Keep in mind that if you don't, it doesn't matter, as the Slenderman's greatest strength lies in his unknowns.
Now that you know a bit about Slenderman himself, what is it that makes him so scary in this game? Slender plays to several strengths that have been used in horror gaming for many years. The first is total isolation. You are completely alone. No one is going to save you and you cannot save yourself. You have no weapon and no way of fighting or standing up to the Slenderman. The only option you have when you encounter him, is to run.
There is no reason given as to who you are, why you are in the woods, or why you need to collect the 8 pages. You are given a single objective and that is all. This automatically places the character into an eerie setting. Humans fear what they do not know and what they do not understand, thus the unknown forest, the pages and objective become tools of fear.
The second is how we react to the Slenderman. Amnesia: the Dark Descent stands as a pinnacle in survival horror. A similarity Slender has with Amnesia: The monsters will kill you just by being around you. The Slenderman kills you when you look at him. The farther away it is, the longer the process takes. Knowing that, the best way to win the game is just don't look, right? Wrong. If the Slenderman catches you, he kills you. By the way, unless you're sprinting, he can move faster than you. So how do you stop him?
You look at him.
The Slenderman cannot move while you look at him, however, look for too long and he'll kill you. This puts the player in a torturous, paradoxical wheel of horror. The entirety of the game, you know he's looming over your shoulder, chasing you, stalking you. You as the player must make the decision to turn around and look for him, knowing that this decision could help lead you to salvation or damnation.
Another of the eight pages
Overall, Slender places the player in a terrifying experience. The game is short, free and requires no investment to get a scare. You can go download and play Slender right now. Just don't do it alone in the dark.
